Week 9 // Paper Prototype

Our product's first physical prototype.

For the first time, we seriously thought about the look and feel of our product. It started with a lecture by the lab staff that opened our minds about the advantages and lacks of a physical product, then we met to think about the first design of our item, that will reflect kids at elementary school age the impact of their behavior online (positive and negative).


The first thoughts took us to a think of a lamp that will be placed in class, and will react to the kids reports about offensive and empowering behavior online.

The reaction of the lamp to the reports will be mostly with light change to influence the atmosphere in class, we also came up with more questions to check with the users later: will the product react immediately when a classmate reported? or is it a weekly time that the teacher shows the week's results? Will the kids report through their phones (in an app) or through a small private "remote controller" each one will have?


 

We chose that the product will react on a weekly basis (in a weekly teacher lecture for instance), and therefore we think about an item that will "put on a show" when activated.

We are debating between two kinds of lamps:

  • A volcano lava lamp that will erupt with different color depending on this week's online impact (positive or negative).


  • A tree lamp that will blossom on positive behavior or light in red on negative behavior


 

The next weeks will be design oriented, and we're looking forward to test our ideas and hypothesis on our potential users.
