Week 1 // Domains of Interest

On this week we had to select three domains to focus on, interview experts/potential uses in order to find problems or opportunities.

Ideas for domains (Brainstorming)

  • Transparency in media

  • Transparency for the third age

  • Transparency in education

  • Transparency in sports

  • Transparency in privacy and digital usage

  • Transparency in public transportation

We finally chose to focus on the first three domains for our research: transparency in media, transparency for the third age and transparency in education.

Interviews and research insights

We preformed interviews and research about the three chosen domains. The following sections concludes our insights.

Transparency in media

  • There in tension between children's desire for independence and the parent's responsibility for their children's security online and offline (the content they see online, the people they connected with, the places they visit, etc.)

  • We discoverd fear for children to consume news over the main channels (TV, news apps).

  • Children and teenagers spend a lot of time playing video games a day, they also don't watch live TV often (prefer Netflix/VOD/recorded)

  • There is a professional value to use wearables in youth sports teams (basketball, football, etc.), but there is also a fear for the bad competition such data can lead to.

  • COVID-19 increased our news consumption at first. The motives were the need to know more about this big new thing and stress. Over time, the increment had decreased and led to even less interest in news due to over consumption. "Causes anxiety, nervousness, to uncertainty. The increased consumption has not done well"

  • News felt not authentic due to a lot of contradictions and the feeling of political intervention.

  • Increment in hard-to-watch content on news and social media. To much information caused anxiety.

  • The traditional media (TV, newspapers) consider over dramatic "The feeling is that we're on a war".

  • "Transparency in news means objectivity and also delivering more 'good' news for us".

Transparency for the third age

  • We discovered that the older generation feels dependent on the younger generation, mostly technologically, and its not a good feeling "We don't understand its as you do, you were born to this".

  • Loneliness is the hardest problem the elderly are facing.

  • It will be hard to choose to focus an elderly project in COVID time (remote meetings).

Transparency in education

  • School students are not so cooperative about online learning.

  • A lot of confusion in the education system during COVID-19, led to increment in anxiety and stress in teachers and education workers.

  • Teachers discovered they can do more things for themselves and their own happiness (such as taking online courses, more family time) during COVID.

  • The offline to online lecture transformation is hard and complicated, technologically and conceptual.

  • Online learning is far from perfection, Zoom meeting is not the way.

  • Online courses are picked mostly due to personal recommendation or rating on site.
